Where Your Support Went
This year the Foundation gave the library $301,084 toward programs, books and materials. Highlights of the Foundation’s support follows:

Measure X
Measure X coupled with the previously passed Measure B delivers a $42 per parcel to our 12 City Library locations.  Measure X passed with a resounding 79% of the vote, showing that Sacramento loves their Library.  This combined parcel covers the basic costs of operating the locations but is still shy of being able to build up the reserve.   The Foundation contributed $35,000 to make sure this important parcel tax was passed.

Summer Reading
The Foundation supplied $137,500 to the Sacramento Public Library’s 2016 Summer Reading Program.  This follows  investment of $125,000 in 2015, $110,000 in 2014, $100,000 in 2013 and $59,000 in 2012.  In 2016 the library enrolled more than 28,000 children 0-17.  While we did not see an increase this year, we are sticking to our goal of supporting 1 in 4 of Sacramento’s children to participate — i.e. 90,000 children.

Books and Materials Endowment
This year’s distribution of more than $50,388 boosted the Sacramento Public Library’s collection.

Children’s Area
Due to generous support from the Diane Utsumi bequest and the general fund of the Foundation, both the North Highlands/Antelope and the Sylvan Oaks branches will be getting  new and enhanced Children’s Areas designed to provide children with the early literacy and reading tools they need.  The new spaces created will encourage pre-literacy skills by providing developmentally appropriate books, technology, and manipulatives. It will also provide appropriate resources for early literacy development and continued literacy development for school aged children.

The Carmichael branch will be creating an early literacy Activity Center.
The Colonial Heights Library added several computers to their teen center offering and follow on support from the Ritz and June Naygrow Family Foundation allows the branch to continue developing technology solutions for the younger patrons.
The Foundation has made $5,000 available for a book refresh on the First 5 Sacramento Bookmobile.
Branch Support
Arden Dimick received more than $13,000 for an unspecified project still to be detailed through a proposal from the Library.
Sacramento Room Endowment
This year’s distribution of more than $44,985is designated for digitization of the Sacramento Room archive.  A proposal from the Library is still pending for this gift and will be focused on continuing the digitization of the archive.  The previous 2 year’s support has been used to create an additional room temperature controlled area for the growing archive.
Sacramento Room General Collection
The Jack and Lillian Sioukas Endowment Fund to Benefit Sacramento Public Library Sacramento Room, held by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, gives the Sacramento Room’s general collection support every year.
Read and Feed Demonstration Gardens
The Junior League of Sacramento is the lead funder for the Read and Seed Demonstration Garden. Over the next few years the Junior League, Library and Foundation hope to partner to create more gardens at more branches.
